Under ISO 17025 and the 2 versions Good Laboratory Practices mandated by United States government agencies (the US Environmental Protection Agency/ Occupational Safety and Health Administration version and the Food and Drug Administration version, the use of standard operating procedures (SOPs) is required.
An SOP is a detailed instruction on how to do a task. What tasks require at SOP? Any task that has a potential impact of the quality of laboratory results, whether within the laboratory itself or in any other organization, falls under this mandate.
