Topic Background

For a business or organization to function properly, the existence of a well-defined safety & health program is a fundamental requirement.

For starters, having a safety program is one of the requirements of OSHA, which is part of the US Department of Labor. It is also a requirement by most insurance companies, particularly the Workers Compensation insurance carriers.

It is also considered as one of the Best Practices for running a business, since protecting the safety and health of your employees is a moral and Company culture responsibility.

And lastly, many personal injury lawyers have defined a Safety & Health Program as one of their biggest nightmares. This is because the allegation of ‘negligence’ or other egregious conduct by the employer, such as following a severe or fatal incident, will be much harder to effectively apply if you have a tight safety program. In other words, your Safety Program can protect you from a lot of spears and arrows.

Getting this right is not a particularly difficult or costly exercise. Indeed, much of the heavy lifting has already been accomplished. OSHA publishes their own annual ‘Top Ten’ list of chronic safety violations. We will discuss tips and techniques for the non-safety person to engage on these issues for a successful outcome.

One approach to managing a Program is to focus on ‘compliance’ and avoiding the OSHA top ten minefield. This approach is not considered a particularly effective method, since it will probably ignore a lot of other Safety and Health areas.

This webinar will describe Best Practices to avoid the category of a ‘serious’ or ‘wilful’ OSHA penalty and develop a well-rounded Safety Program.
