We will identify key policy steps required for compliance for each of the four high-risk areas: Sterile medication compounding, suicide prevention, high-level disinfection, and hemodialysis. Surveyors have been trained to have a different approach to surveying these areas. Leadership needs to provide direct oversight to these areas as well as the documentation of training, competency assessment, and monitoring. We will discuss the criteria for orientation, training and competency assessments. Personnel involved may be so distracted by all the work that needs to be accomplished that they may not have consistent mindfulness while processing equipment, preparing medications, performing dialysis and being vigilance for suicide prevention. Each step of each of these activities is an ongoing key for patient safety.

Course Objectives:

In July of 2018, The Joint Commission began enhancing its focus on sterile medication compounding, suicide prevention, high-level disinfection, and hemodialysis. These are areas that introduce significant risk into facilities and harm has occurred. There have been a number of immediate threat findings related to these topics. The  Joint Commission stated that a letter went out to the CEO of accredited organizations informing them of this enhanced survey process.
