The immune system has been found to communicate with our gut microbiome and protect the mother during pregnancy and the fetal-allograft from maternal rejection. With the era of personalized cancer immunotherapy is upon us – the “immunologists’ toolbox” has never been so critical in our understanding of how we, as a species, interact with our environment and how we protect our host biological ecosystem from both foreign and self-inflicted pathogenesis.
