The increasing interest of mental health issues in the workplace has been fueled by various trends. Namely, the increasing laws and regulations granting protections to individuals with disabilities of all types, including mental health issues.

In addition, mental health clinicians have become more aware that the mental health concerns of their clients are significantly affected by the workplace, and that treatment that does not include those particular concerns and dynamics, are not likely to succeed.

Work lives and personal lives have become much more intertwined and integrated than ever before. Mental health impairments have become a much broader category, with the DSM-V currently listing nearly 300 mental disorders, and the ADA, along with the passage of the ADAAA, made significant changes to the definition of disability, broadening its scope of protected disabilities, including mental health issues.

Why Should You Attend:

Mental health issues at work has become one of the most common causes of workplace absenteeism due to illness and stress, and can be costly to employers in terms of reduced productivity, poor work quality and high costs of recruitment and turnover. Many employers and managers do not have the experience or training to know how to properly deal with the issues.

This course looks at the impact of mental health at work and explains why ensuring the mental well-being of employees should be a top priority for organizations across all sectors.

Mental health problems among staff pose a growing risk to employers. Yet the stigma attached to mental health still persists in many of today’s workplaces and a lot of employers are unaware of the extent of the problem and how to handle it – meaning that employees are not getting the help and support that they need and organizations and individuals are suffering as a result.

During fiscal year 2016 alone, EEOC resolved over 5,000 charges of discrimination based on mental health conditions, obtaining approximately $20 million for individuals with mental health conditions who were unlawfully denied employment and reasonable accommodations.

31.9 % of charges filed with EEOC in 2017 were disability discrimination cases, a total of 26, 838 cases.
