Multi-State Handbooks: Friend Or Foe

4525
Duration : 75 Minutes

An Employee Handbook can be a great tool or a landmine. As a tool a handbook can be a new employee’s introduction into your organization’s culture and environment or a “go-to” guide for general questions about benefits, policies and the work environment. As a landmine, a handbook that has not been update or reviewed by counsel may become a piece of evidence used against the organization in a court of law.

Adding a multi-state organization requires your handbook to reflect the organization as a whole, with content that encompasses federal law, two or more state laws and even local city or county statues which impose or impact employment practices in their jurisdiction.

Lastly, an Employee Handbook needs to be a living document, written with clarity and understandable within all the layers of your organization. In other words, a document that represents the organization’s values, is a clear picture of how it conducts its business and how its employees are treated.

In this course, we will discuss some differences in state and federal law to be aware of, consider “At Will” employers, union vs non-union and the difference state requirements for Child (Student) employment.
